SPY PICS: Renault, Benz... and Kangoo attitude

This is the Mercedes-Benz Citan, a Renault LCV wearing a three-pointed star on the grille

Word about the strategic bond formed between Renault and Mercedes-Benz is gradually leaking out. We learned some time ago that the next generation smart fortwo will be built on the Renault Twingo platform. More recently, it became known that four-cylinder Benz engines will power Infiniti models in due course.

Now the latest gem is at hand; the Mercedes-Benz Citan has been caught testing in the snow by the spy photographers at Carparazzi. If it looks vaguely familiar, that would be due to a heavy concentration of Renault DNA, being based as it is on the French company's Kangoo van.

According to the photographers, the Citan will debut as a concept in September at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover, Germany. Production vehicles will follow at some unspecified date. Previously Carparazzi had observed mules undergoing tests in the field, but the vehicle shown here is pretty much the real deal. Rumour has it that production models will offer buyers a blind van, a crew cab and other configurations based on differing roof heights and wheelbases. Drive will be supplied by petrol and diesel engines, with Benz said to be planning electric-powered versions as well.

Carparazzi has it on good authority that the Citan marks the start of an overall revamp for the Benz van range, with Viano (and presumably Vito) due for all-new models soon, plus a facelift for the Sprinter.
