Skoda plans to roll out its new flagship SUV globally within about 18 months, with the seven-seater expected to arrive in Australia not long after.
It has been a long time coming, with former Skoda boss, now Jaguar Land Rover Australia MD Matthew Wiesner alluding to Skoda's need for a seven-seat SUV as long ago as August 2011.
But while it may have been a while getting started, work on the new SUV appears to be progressing well, based on this mule snapped by an Automedia spy photographer somewhere in Scandinavia. Looking slightly incongruous in its Yeti sheet metal, the pre-production SUV is actually wider and longer (100mm longer than the next-gen Tiguan, in fact), and is destined to compete with vehicles like the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe.
Within the hallowed walls of Skoda, the new SUV is referred to as the A-Plus-SUV and is earmarked to be sold in both front- and all-wheel drive configurations, powered by two petrol and two diesel engines. Lower-output engines – a 103kW petrol and 110kW diesel – will be reserved for the front-wheel drive variants.
