Subaru's latest concept to be unveiled in Tokyo this month is somewhat more practical than the whacky racers which normally abound at the show. In keeping with its core technologies and market interests, the B5-TPH is an AWD crossover coupe which boasts a hybrid powertrain.
The builder of the iconic WRX says the B5-TPH: "develops the theme of crossover elements in a future car." A petrol-electric hybrid, the B5 blends the characteristics of a sportwagon and sport utility vehicle (SUV).
The B5-TPH features what Subaru has termed a Turbo Parallel Hybrid (TPH) AWD powertrain. An electric motor is partnered with an Active Valve Control System (AVCS)-equipped turbocharged 2.0lt Miller cycle fuel-injected petrol boxer engine.
Electrical power is provided by a generator located between the petrol powerplant and its automatic transmission. The B5-TPH is also equipped with a manganese lithium-ion battery pack designed in all-in-one packaging with an electronic control unit. Lightweight and compact compared to other hybrid set-ups, Subaru says this configuration makes it possible to utilise its Symmetrical AWD running gear and retain conventional weight distribution for better handling.
The B5, says Subaru is: "a glimpse of a future sport specialty car." Its styling is based on Subaru Outback but projects in a two-door offroad coupe/wagon form. Generous ground clearance and large diameter tyres give the B5 an offroad racer look and the rear clamshell hatch provide access to the large deck-style stowage area.
