Suzuki Jimny joins NSW Police
Donated Suzuki Jimny 4x4 arrives in Lake Macquarie to conquer crime as ‘Sergeant Jim’The coastal cops of Lake Macquarie (NSW) have just welcomed their latest recruit, but Sergeant Jim – a Suzuki Jimny 4x4 SUV – is designed to do more than just fight crime.
Now a full-time member of the Lake Macquarie Police Crime Prevention Unit (LMCPU) on the NSW central coast, Sergeant Jim’s most important job will be in helping boost community engagement.
Already stickered up in fluoro NSW Police livery, the specially outfitted off-roader will serve alongside cops in the Crime Prevention Unit in a bid to prevent, disrupt, and respond to crime in the region.
And it comes at no cost to tax payers. Suzuki Australia has donated the new Jimny, which is set to tour schools and community events across the Lake Macquarie district, one of the largest regional cities in NSW.
It’s a community that’s rapidly growing, with a current population of 221,000 residents expected to grow to around 250,000 by 2036.
According to Superintendent Tracy Chapman APM, Commander of Lake Macquarie Police District, the Jimny will be invaluable in helping break the ice at local events.
“The vehicle will allow officers to connect more easily with the public,” said Superintendent Chapman.
“Sergeant Jim’s livery will hopefully be a great conversation starter while on display and get more people, especially younger people, comfortable with approaching their local police.”
A cult favourite for decades, the Suzuki Jimny is a pint-sized off-road SUV with proper 4x4 capabilities, meaning police won’t be restricted to tarmac.
The Jimny comes powered by 75kW/130Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (Sergeant Jim is auto) and part-time four-wheel drive.
But Sergeant Jim isn’t your standard patrol car; there’s no pursuit gear or radars (at least not yet), but what it lacks in speed, it more than makes up for in personality.
A spokesperson for Suzuki Australia told carsales Sergeant Jim is restricted to the Lake Macquarie region for now, so don’t expect to see it parading around Bondi Beach just yet.
