Suzuki Jimny Sierra Pickup takes shape

Concept car to debut at 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon

Suzuki has previewed a utility version of the Jimny off-roader, and will show the prototype at this month’s Tokyo Auto Salon.

The Suzuki Jimny Sierra Pickup Style concept uses the same basic platform and wheelbase as the latest generation of Suzuki’s cult-like Jimny SUV, however eschews the rear seats for a tacked-on open tray.

There are some small styling changes, like a new rectangular grille with throwback Suzuki lettering, matched by suitably retro wheels, colour coded bronze features and fake wood panelling. In a nod to the car’s off-road pretentions, the Sierra Pick Style concept employs chunky off-road tyres and built-in tow hooks and spotlights.

Drivetrain specifics remain unknown at this stage. There’s every chance the pick-up will utilise Suzuki’s existing 75kW 1.5-litre engine or, in a possible portent for the concept’s production future in Australia, a Japan-specific 660cc three-cylinder engine good for 47kW.

Chatter around the pick-up comes as Suzuki Australia prepares to unleash the Jimny SUV onto local roads and off-road tracks locally on Australia Day, January 26. The importer is yet to reveal pricing, although it’s expected the 2019 Suzuki Jimny will be more expensive than the model it replaces

Stay tuned for the ute’s full unveiling from the Tokyo Auto Salon mid-January.
