Toyota and Subaru are tipped to reveal close-to-production concept cars previewing the next-generation Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ at the Tokyo motor show next month.
According to Japan's Best Car, the new Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ have both been slated for launch in the first half of 2021.
Originally, it was rumoured the replacement for the Toyota and Subaru clones would be based on a heavily revised version of the current platform, but Best Car cast doubts on that theory, suggesting both the 2021 BRZ and 86 will be all-new.
Best bet is both cars will switch to Toyota's latest TNGA platform, which has been engineered for rear-drive applications.
Under the bonnet there will be more change, with the 2.0-litre FA20 four-cylinder engine likely to be junked for the larger 2.4-litre FA24 flat-four boxer engine that's also sourced from Subaru and rumoured to produce around 160kW.
Like before, six-speed manual and automatic transmissions will be available.
In more good news for enthusiasts, the move to the latest TNGA platform should bring significant weight-savings, boosting performance over the current 86 and BRZ.
