TOKYO MOTOR SHOW: Toyota Aqua concepts

Toyota has released renderings of two pint-sized ‘Aqua’ hybrid concepts it will debut at next week’s Tokyo motor show, the cheeky metallic pink Aqua Air compact convertible and the lime-green Aqua Cross show car.

Representing light-sized convertible and crossover vehicle proposals respectively, the Aqua models could also preview the look of Toyota’s next-generation Yaris hatch and/or Prius c city-hybrid B-segment models.

Toyota has made no official comments about building production versions, but could use their Tokyo appearances to gauge reactions from the public and press.

Unsurprisingly, both concepts are very much prototypes at this stage, measuring less than four metres long and with room for four people and precious little luggage.

Both cars employ Prius c running gear and mechanicals, namely a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine that outputs 54kW/111Nm, paired with an electric motor that takes peak power to 74kW.

Combined with a continuously variable transmission automatic transmission (CVT), fuel consumption is stated at just 2.8L/100km.

Measuring 3990mm long and 1690mm wide, the tiny Aqua Air convertible car features an aggressive front grille flanked by LED running lights and side air-dams that draw influence from Toyota's latest Corolla.

Meantime, the Aqua Cross presents metallic underbody protection panels, foglights, white mirror caps and roof rails, plus black plastic cladding around its wheel-arches, side skirts and bumpers. There’s also a dark-themed interior with black trim, green stitching, green-piped carpets and aluminium pedals.

Toyota's colossal Tokyo motor show exhibit will also include the FCV hydrogen concept and the updated FT-86 Open concept.
