Lexus has doubled down on the ‘Overtrail’ nameplate and will soon offer a go-anywhere version of its flagship LX off-roader, building on the recent success of the lesser GX 550 Overtrail.
Due in local showrooms later this year, the 2025 Lexus LX Overtrail will be offered in both ‘600’ petrol and ‘500d’ diesel forms but exclusively as a five-seater, with the extra off-road capability provided by locking front and rear differentials and aggressive 265/70 R18 all-terrain tyres.
Other enhancements include a 30-litre auxiliary fuel tank, black exterior appointments as well as Overtrail-specific seats and ornamentation.
The new twin lockers and rolling stock will pair with the LX’s existing suite of off-road gadgetry which includes multi-terrain select, downhill assist control, crawl control, multi-terrain monitor and active height control, not to mention a full-time 4x4 system and low-range transfer case.
Pricing and specification details of the new luxury off-road hero will be announced closer to its launch in the coming months, however a starting price approaching $200,000 is very much on the cards.
The Overtrail will arrive as part of the LX portfolio’s MY25 update which will deliver more technology, enhanced safety credentials and potentially even a hybrid powertrain.
Sourced from the Toyota Tundra pick-up truck, the hybrid system in question is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 petrol-electric set-up outputting a combined 326kW/790Nm, hence the fitting ‘700h’ numerical designation which positions it at the pinnacle of the LX’s powertrain hierarchy.
“Lexus Australia is currently evaluating the availability and suitability of this powertrain for Australian customers,” a local Lexus spokesperson said.
The emergence of a hybrid LX means it should only be a matter of time before an electrified 300 Series surfaces, though it’s unclear if Toyota would/will water-down the system as a replacement for the LandCruiser’s 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 pending the introduction of the NVES.
