It may not look like it, but this ungainly beast is the same car Toyota revealed last week as the sleek FT-86 Concept for the Tokyo Motor Show. The test mule was spied at Germany's Nurburgring, so Toyota and Subaru are obviously serious about making this joint-venture sportscar genuinely sporty.
While the FT-86 was Toyota's styling take on the front-engined compact sports coupe, this chunky prototype houses the mechanical package for the car. Subaru is believed to be leading the development on the program and there are some obvious Subaru pointers on this version.
The wheels are straight from the STI range of rims and some of the panels, including the doors, appear to be borrowed from other members of the Subaru family; giving the car a real Frankenstein appearance.
There have been suggestions that while the Toyota is a more focused two-seater, the Subaru pushes closer to a genuine 2+2 model. The spy shots give that speculation some credence, with the extended roofline and tiny boot lid.
With track testing underway and Toyota revealing its thinly-veiled production concept, expect to hear plenty more about this new machine in the near future.
