Toyota 86 wait list exceeds 18 months

Delivery time for Toyota's rear-drive pocket rocket blows out on some variants, colours

The waiting list for Toyota’s must-have 86 coupe has blown out to more than 18 months – three months more than stated at the Australia International Motor Show in Sydney last fortnight.

The Toyota 86 has received rave reviews since going on sale here mid-2012, driving higher than expected demand for the cut-price coupe. And Toyota’s sub-$30,000 pocket rocket also out-ranked all comers in motoring.com.au’s recent group test, where it took on the likes of BMW 135i, Hyundai Veloster, Mazda MX-5 and Renault Sport Megane.

Yesterday afternoon, Toyota’s retail website indicated that certain models and paint combinations would attract a longer wait time than others, stating:

“Please note that the waiting period may exceed 18 months depending on the time of order and choice of transmission and colour. Contact your Toyota dealer for further information.”

It was a fact confirmed by Toyota Australia public relations manager, Mike Breen, who told motoring.com.au that Pegasus White models were especially popular.

Subsequently, Toyota spokesman Stephen Coughlan informed motoring.com.au that the waiting list would come down in the new year, as a result of TMCA securing additional stock from the factory.

"This new stock looks like it will bring the wait list down to around 8-9 months," Mr Couglan advised in an email. "At this stage, we do not have confirmation of the grade, transmission or colour of the additional cars; therefore, while we anticipate a reduction in waiting times generally, we cannot be specific about the situation for a particular customer or a specific model variant.

"We understand the frustration to customers caused by delays.  We will continue to do everything we can to ensure Toyota dealers have as much information as possible regarding the supply of vehicles to customers.

"The model split for all orders to date, is 60 per cent GTS and 40 per cent GT.  The most popular variant is the GTS manual, which accounts for roughly 40 per cent of all orders. In terms of colours, White, Black and Red are proving to be the most popular."
