Toyota announces new engines
Efficiency gains of at least 10 per cent for 14 new Toyota engines by 2015Toyota has announced a family of up to 14 new petrol engines to be introduced globally by 2015, bringing fuel-efficiency improvements of at least 10 per cent.
Toyota says its new engine family benefits from lessons learned in its hybrid powertrains, including new combustion and loss-reduction technologies.
The first will be a 1.3-litre four-cylinder that employs the Atkinson-cycle combustion process previously used only in dedicated petrol-electric models.
It is claimed to achieve a maximum thermal efficiency of 38 per cent, which Toyota says is “top-level among mass-produced engines”.
It will be followed by a downsized 1.0-litre engine claimed to achieve maximum thermal efficiency of 37 per cent.
Toyota said the new engines will be offered “in models scheduled for partial redesign in the near future”, which could include this year’s facelift for its smallest model in Australia, the Yaris.
