Toyota Australia celebrates dual milestone

Fifty years down the track, Toyota Australia has notched up two million cars manufactured
Toyota announced last week that it has sold two million locally made cars over the 50 years it has been operating as a vehicle manufacturer in Australia.
Australia was the first country outside of Japan to build cars for the automotive giant, starting with the little Tiara back in 1963. Engine production fired up in 1978.
Over its 50-year history, Toyota Australia has sold one million cars to local customers, with strong sales helping shift the second million in the last 21 years.  By the end of 2012, local production facilities had pumped out three million units, one million of those cars finding homes abroad, and the remaining 1.98 million finding spaces in Aussie driveways.
Toyota Australia has been building cars for export since 1986 and, of the 101,000 cars produced in 2012, 70 per cent were shipped overseas.
At present, Camry – which Toyota has been building locally since 1987, Camry Hybrid and Aurion models as well as petrol four-cylinder and hybrid engines trundle off the production line at its Altona factory in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
Engines are exported to the company’s other production plants in Thailand and Malaysia.
The company has made a number of models at its Australian facilities, including the popular Corolla, Corona and luxurious Crown.
Tony Cramb, the company’s director of sales and marketing, said that such milestones have served as key contributors to the domestic economy, manufacturing industry and employment “this achievement is the latest demonstration that Toyota is building cars in Australia with the quality, technology, performance, fuel economy and value demanded by local and overseas buyers,"
Mr Cramb added "we have been doing that for half a century – and our employees, suppliers and dealers are committed to continuing to make their vital contributions to Australia."
