Toyota responds to Scampaign
Don't be drawn in by SMS and email swindles bearing the Toyota name, car company advisesToyota has issued a warning to consumers to be aware of Toyota-branded email or SMS communications offering prizes or soliciting personal information.
The car company has been inundated with "hundreds" of queries from members of the public checking the bona fides of such emails and SMS messages received.
According to Toyota Australia Executive Director of Corporate Services, Bernie O'Connor, examples of emails that are in no way sanctioned by Toyota include: 'Toyota Flood Relief Fund', 'Toyota International Lotto', 'Toyota Car Promotions', 'Toyota Car International Promotion Program' and 'Toyota Fortune Lotto Draw'.
"Toyota Australia and its related companies have no connection with any lotteries that inform members of the public, whether by SMS or email, that they have won a prize, even if the 'Toyota' name appears in the message," he was quoted as saying in a press release issued today.
"Any SMS or email of this nature has not been sent by Toyota Australia or by an external party with our permission."
"Members of the public should avoid responding to any such email or providing any personal information or money, as any SMS or email using the 'Toyota' name and claiming to award a lottery prize is highly likely to be a scam."
O'Connor cautions anyone in receipt of an email like this to check the ACCC's SCAMwatch website at www.scamwatch.gov.au.
