Toyota shines at Tokyo Auto Salon

Toyota figured prominently at the Tokyo Auto Salon -- Japan's version of the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show -- with the eye-catching FT-86 G Sports Concept garnering much of the headlines.

The vehicle is said to preview the aftermarket mods that will be available on the new rear-drive sportster jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, and the concept will also be featured in the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 video game.

Adorned by an aggressive body kit comprising bespoke front and rear spoilers and a vented carbonfibre bonnet, the concept reportedly sports a turbo-fed 2.0-litre flat-four (although precise information is sketchy).

Also from the Toyota stable was the GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept, an extreme version of the defunct MR2 that's stuffed full of a 3.3-litre V6 hybrid powertrain and all-wheel-drive hardware.

According to Toyota, that results in "more than 392hp" (288kW), enabling the MR2 to dispatch the 0-60mph 0-96km/h) sprint in less than 4.5 seconds.

Reports emanating from Japan quoted sources who said a vehicle based on the GRMN Sports Hybrid concept could go on sale as early as 2011.

Meanwhile, celebrated Japanese tuning firm Tommy Kaira unveiled a tuning package for the GT-R dubbed the Silver Wolf.

The makeover leaves the engine untouched, but it does bring a comprehensive aero kit comprising new front and rear bumpers, side skirts, front fenders, a bootlid spoiler and revised rear diffuser.

The Nissan GT-R Silver Wolf also scores new 20-inch rims with Pirelli P-Zero rubber and a new Super Sports suspension system. In addition, it gains a titanium sport exhaust system and beefed-up brakes.

Inside, there's a pair of Recaro racing seats and lashings of bright red trim on the roof and centre console. Just the thing for days on which you're nursing a monster hangover...
