Toyota Yaris gets top NCAP rating under new regime
Small Japanese supermini first car to tackle tougher-than-ever crash test but still scores top marksThe all-new Toyota Yaris has racked up the maximum five stars in the latest round of Euro NCAP crash tests, setting a new safety benchmark for its class.
Testing a five-door Yaris hybrid, the little Toyota was the first car ever to undergo the new tougher NCAP testing that includes a new frontal offset test.
Other difficult tests introduced under the new regime include the introduction of countermeasure for injuries in far-side impacts and a mobile progressive deformable barrier test.
These tougher tests have also been adopted by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) in Australia, which similarly this week handed the Yaris a top five-star ranking based on its related assessment criteria.
Despite the small size of the Yaris, Euro NCAP crash testers said the Toyota city car performed well in all tests, praising both its centre-mounted airbag and Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance aids.
“Congratulations to Toyota on a top rating for the Yaris,” said Euro NCAP boss Michiel van Ratingen.
“This has been a tough year for all concerned, and I'm grateful to Euro NCAP’s labs and employees, who have worked hard to deliver safety while staying safe.”
Curiously, the Toyota Yaris remains the only car to have undergone the 2020 Euro NCAP crash tests.
The European safety body also tested the latest Renault Clio and pure-electric Audi e-tron Sportback, but they were assessed using last year's test regime. Both scored the full five stars.
