Toyota's next Corolla sedan exposed
Leaked images of redesigned Corolla sedan reveal adventurous new design for next iteration of Toyota's top-selling four-doorFirst images of what appear to be the production version of Toyota’s next-generation Corolla sedan have surfaced on the internet, revealing a toned-down – but still relatively courageous - version of the edgy Furia concept that debuted at last month’s Detroit motor show.
As motoring.com.au reported at the time, the Furia was designed primarily to whet the appetite of North America’s massive small sedan market, in which the existing Corolla sedan has competed since 2007.
The same applies in Australia, where the next Corolla sedan has been confirmed for release in February 2014 – 16 months after the 11th-generation Corolla hatchback reached dealerships. Together, Toyota Australia will be hoping the Corolla sedan and hatch can wrest local market sales dominance from the all-conquering Mazda3.
While the leaked images, which are reported to have originated from Poland, indicate the production car will lose the concept’s rear wing and feature less adventurous tail-light designs, they also suggest the showroom model’s front-end styling will be somewhere between the latest Corolla hatchback and the Furia concept in terms of aggression.
The result is that the two Corolla body derivatives will separated more than ever before in terms of design, while maintaining a family resemblance with newer models like this month’s new-generation RAV4 and, almost certainly, the MkIII Kluger also due here next February.
If the Furia concept is any guide, the new Corolla sedan will also be significantly longer, wider and lower than the 11th-generation Corolla five-door – in line with its US orientation.
Riding on a 2700mm wheelbase (100mm longer than the hatch), the Furia measures 4620mm long (245mm longer than the hatch and 75mm longer than the existing Corolla sedan), 1805mm wide (45mm wider than the hatch and sedan) and 1425mm high – 35mm lower than the hatch and 50mm lower than the sedan, thanks in part to the show car’s low ride height and huge 19-inch alloy wheels and low-profile rubber.
As per the hatch, expect the new Corolla sedan to be powered by a mildly upgraded 103kW/173Nm 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine – but it will not be available here with the diesel or hybrid powertrains to be fitted for other markets and nor will a wagon version be forthcoming for Australia.
