Update for 308; sedan version 408 for 2012

Peugeot 308 Series II on its way - and with it adjustments to price and specification - and sedan 408 expected late next year

Updates to the Peugeot 308 introduce sharpened front and rear styling, a new entry level model and two wagon options, followed by stop/start later this year. The brand’s volume-selling small car will also be available in sedan form, called 408, late 2012.

The revised range also introduces new names for specification levels. The XS, XSE and XTE trims will now be referred to as either Access, Active or Allure. Peugeot is aiming for 50 per cent of its sales to come from outside Europe by 2015 so marketers decided to apply names understood in French and English.

As the name implies the Access spec is the entry level 308. The Series II update brings 16-inch alloy wheels for the 1.6-litre HDi models, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. The Active spec adds LED headlights, folding side mirrors and the Allure includes part-leather seats, aluminium foot pedals and side sills.

The range will now start at $22,990 for the 1.4-litre 308 with five-speed manual and 16-inch steel wheels.

The new wagon models -- not to be confused with the Touring options -- will be offered in Access specification; one without the brand’s trademark panoramic roof.

"The reason these cars [wagon and Touring] are a bit different is because we got feedback from customers saying they wanted a station wagon in the 308 that was minus the glass roof -- particularly rural customers," said Ken Thomas, Peugeot Australia MD during the 508 launch.

The new 308 Series II hatch and Touring models are scheduled for local showrooms in August. The updated CC model is expected by October; featuring full leather trim, airwave scarf (neck-level heating), memory seats with side mirrors and Bluetooth/USB system.
