Volkswagen Australia's managing director, Anke Koeckler, told motoring.com.au last week that the importer would "be stupid" not to badger the factory for supply of the up!-based Taigun SUV to sell in Australia.
"If there's an opportunity that this car gets produced... if there are any plans to get this car into production we would certainly look at it," Ms Koeckler said.
And the local MD is of the opinion that there is a groundswell of interest in such small SUVs – from Ford, Holden and Opel. Following the other three companies into that sector of the market would be a natural choice. "If you look at where the growth comes from, here in Australia, it's certainly from the SUV segment – so we would be stupid not to look into it if this opportunity came up," Ms Koeckler concluded.
But what of other VW product for Australia? Is there any word yet on the Concept BlueSport, the mid-engined sports car unveiled in Detroit back in 2009? According to Ms Koeckler, there's no further information to hand yet, as to whether the car will go into production, despite the precedent of Toyota and Subaru's shared-platform models, the 86 and BRZ. "Globally I can't tell you right now, where we are at," Ms Koeckler said. "For us it's not actually an option for the time being..."
