Volkswagen has unveiled yet another member of its pure-electric I.D. EV model family following the launch last night of the VW I.D. Roomzz ahead of its debut tomorrow at the Shanghai motor show.
Measuring in at 4915mm long, 1890mm wide and standing 1760mm tall, the flagship Volkswagen I.D. Roomzz concept previews a three-row battery-powered SUV that will be on sale by 2021.
Offering more space inside than a Volkswagen Touareg, the all-new I.D. Roomzz is claimed to bring levels of versatility usually associated with a people-mover.
The concept features individual seats that are capable of rotating up to 25 degrees and access to the light and airy cabin is made easier thanks to sliding front and rear doors.
Based on Volkswagen's dedicated pure-electric MEB platform, the I.D. Roomzz is said to be capable of Level 4 fully autonomous driving that will only require the driver to take control in limited circumstances, hence the need for the steering wheel and pedals.
Interestingly, when not in use the steering wheel operates as an additional touchscreen to operate the infotainment system.
Inside, despite looking like leather trim, Volkswagen has used a new renewable raw material called AppleSkin.
Since it's targeted initially for China, engineers have also developed an air-conditioning unit that's designed to tackle the type of heavy smog often seen in in cities like Beijing. The climate control system is said to both filter and purify the air entering the cabin.
Powering the I.D. Roomzz is an 82kWh battery that's claimed to provide for a range of up to 450km on a full charge.
Volkswagen claims that, thanks to a new ultra-fast 150kW charger, the zero-emission SUV can be charged up to 80 per cent of its capacity in around 30 minutes.
As well as being quick to charge, the I.D. Roomzz doesn't hang about.
Thanks to twin electric motors that muster 225kW and provide for all-wheel drive, the new VW SUV can hit 100km/h in a claimed 6.6 seconds and top out at a limited 180km/h.
The I.D. Roomzz is the sixth member of the German car-maker's I.D. family and the second pure-electric VW SUV concept after the I.D. Crozz is set to morph into a cut-price alternative to the Tesla Model X.
Pricing is yet to be announced and nor has any information about if or when the production I.D. Roomzz will be available in markets outside of China.
