The Volkswagen Kombi will be reborn this year when the German auto giant finally reveals the all-electric 2022 Volkswagen ID. Buzz in production form on March 9.
Announced via Twitter by Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess, the global debut of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz has been in the pipeline since the original concept was presented at the 2017 Detroit motor show.
Diess’ tweet was only several words long: “The legend returns on 03/09/22!” and was accompanied by a 15-second video of a digitised sketch of the vehicle being drawn and coloured.

Underpinned by the VW Group’s MEB architecture – the same one found under the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 – but featuring plenty of Kombi-inspired design features, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz has been previewed officially twice in the past six months as well as snapped by our spy photographers undergoing real-world testing in Germany.
Full specifications are still to be confirmed, but the various previews and Diess’ tweet reveal a generous wheelbase and a massive Kombi-like glasshouse starting from the rear pillars and extending all the way around the front of the van.
The Kombi’s virtually flat front-end has made way for a slightly more aerodynamic and safety-conscious sloped design, with the bumper largely consisting of a mesh intake like those found on the existing ID. models.
Tipped to offer seating for up to eight occupants, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is expected to eventually make its way Down Under from next year onwards, but not before the ID.3 hatchback and ID.4 SUV are launched here.
