Volkswagen has reportedly filed a new patent for a double-cab pick-up based on its 2022 ID. Buzz electric van, suggesting it’s set for production.
The trademark application features the same image of the all-electric Volkswagen Kombi ute posted back in April by VW’s head of design Klaus Zyciora on Instagram.
The application could also suggest the dual-cab has been now green-lit for production behind the scenes.
Interestingly, the patent suggests the upper bodywork and roof behind the C-pillar will be capable of being removed on the van to create the ute.
Channelling into Volkswagen T2-based single- and crew-cabs from the past, it’s thought the ute will be mechanically identical to the standard Volkswagen ID. Buzz that is powered by a rear-mounted (rear-drive) electric motor that produces 150kW and 310Nm.
That version is good for a top speed of 145km/h and leverages a 77kWh lithium-ion battery pack which enables it to cover about 400km before needing a top-up.
Capable of being charged at up to 170kW, a charge from five to 80 per cent takes just half an hour.
There will be a 111kWh battery option for the longer-wheelbase, three-row version and a smaller battery pack will be available for the ID. Buzz Cargo to help increase its payload.

On the way from an idea to production, there are a lot of unseen design drafts made – like this one:

As well as the ute, a Volkswagen ID. California has also been mooted, turning the ID. Buzz into an electric campervan.
There will also be an ID. Buzz Cargo commercial version, which deletes the rear seats and opens up almost 4000 litres of cargo space – enough room to fit two Euro-spec pallets.
It’s not known when the ID. Buzz will land Down Under but Volkswagen Group Australia has told carsales it is lobbying its head office to bring forward the introduction of the VW brand’s first EVs to late 2023, beginning with the highly anticipated Volkswagen ID.4 mid-size SUV that is expected to start at about $60,000.
Further afield, the rollout should bring the Volkswagen ID.3 hatch, then the ID. Buzz people-mover and the range-topping ID.6 flagship SUV.
