Volkswagen rethinks EV design

Beijing concept to herald new design direction for Volkswagen’s next-generation ID electric cars

Volkswagen has confirmed it will use this week’s 2024 Beijing motor show to unwrap a new concept that signposts the design direction for its future EVs.

Shown in a teaser image, the still-to-be-named concept will preview a replacement for a member of its current ID family of electric cars, which includes the ID.3 hatch, ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs and ID.7 sedan, among others.

Looking like an SUV, the concept will clearly be sportier than today’s ID models, with a heavily raked windscreen and well-defined muscular wheel-arches that will align it with other electric cars from the likes of Porsche.

There are no firm details at this stage, with VW saying only that the new concept will “design a new era” – a clear hint that even though the show car might not lead to a production model, it will be hugely influential.
