T7 Volkswagen Transporter teased ahead of April debut
Sleek new look for seventh-gen van that's set to migrate to Golf platform and get all-wheel drive and plug-in hybrid powerThe front-end design of the new-generation 2021 Volkswagen Transporter and Multivan has been teased ahead of the T7 series' global unveiling in a few weeks' time.
Volkswagen hasn't confirmed exactly when it plans to pull the drapes off its seventh-gen Transporter, but from the first official tease it looks like its new advanced powertrains will be reflected in a more futuristic look for the dependable delivery van.
Featuring a pair of slimmer front LED headlights, designers have introduced a full-length light bar that stretches across its snout.
Although still set to be powered by a full range of combustion engines, the T7's traditional grille in the teaser image has been ditched for a blanked-out plastic panel, making it look like it could be a member of the growing Volkswagen ID family.
Count on electrified versions becoming available, and for the new smoother face to improve aerodynamics and, as a result, reduce running costs.
We've already seen a T7 Volkswagen Mulitvan people-mover testing last year with, spookily, six headless crash test dummies on board.
From our first glimpse of the Ford Transit rival it looks like VW's next-gen van will gain a longer wheelbase for more room inside and will also feature a longer front overhang.
The latter is due to the fact the T7 Volkswagen Transporter is tipped to move to an evolution of the car-maker's latest MQB platform which underpins the current Mk8 Volkswagen Golf hatch.
The advantage of the new architecture is hard not to underestimate. It means that the T7 will not only come with the option of electrified powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid version, it will see the van come equipped with the Volkswagen Group's latest semi-autonomous driving aids.
As well as all the new tech, Volkswagen is primed to offer an all-wheel drive version, paving the way for a Multivan Alltrack derivative that will feature a raised ride height and butch styling to appeal to lifestyle buyers.
