Volkswagen chief executive Herbert Diess has told the German media that his car-making giant has already procured batteries for an astonishing 50 million electric vehicles.
Speaking to trade publication
, Diess revealed the full-scale ambitions for the Volkswagen Group when he announced that the car-maker's vehicle platforms had been "booked" for 50 million cars and that battery procurement for the number of battery cells this involved has already been made."We have bought batteries for 50 million vehicles," Diess revealed, adding in later interviews that a second factory just assembling pure-electric cars could open in the US.
Just yesterday it was revealed that Volkswagen was working on a 'cheap' pure-electric Tesla-rival that would sell for about $30,000, but today's announcement demonstrates just how quickly the car giant will switch to battery-powered vehicles.
In 2017, the Volkswagen Group sold a total of 10.7 million cars globally.
Back-pedalling from Diess' remarks, a VW spokesman has spoken to numerous outlets claiming that the 50 million sum was only a 'theoretical long-term goal' for the soon-to-be-launched MEB platform.
Volkswagen has already announced that it has assigned around €50 billion ($A78b) for battery procurement.
