Volkswagen has trademarked a new GTX badge that's expected to be applied to hotter versions of its pure-electric vehicles -- and the first model to wear it will be the production version of the VW I.D. Crozz II concept that's likely to be called the ID.5, says Autocar.
Set to join the well-established GTI, GTD, GTE and R performance sub-brands already offered by Volkswagen, the battery-powered VW ID.5 GTX sports crossover is already well into its development ahead of a reveal in early 2021, according to the British publication.
The X in the GTX name is said to signify a twin-motor powertrain that will bring all-wheel drive and more performance. Also like Volkswagen's existing GT models, a bespoke chassis tune will also introduce more agile and engaging handling.
While the new GTX nomenclature is designed to offer EV buyers more performance and sportier styling, it's not yet known if it will be applied to the inaugural Volkswagen ID.3 hatch or the ID.4 SUV -- the first I.D. model expected on sale in Australia in 2022.
According to Autocar, the ID.5 GTX isn't the only performance ID model in the pipeline and even faster models are also in development, but at this stage it's unclear which EV model will be first to carry Volkswagen's flagship R high-performance badge.
