For the last 21 years American publication WardsAuto World has awarded an annual 'Ward's 10 best engines' to the most impressive engines available in the United States... and the list for 2015 is more diverse than ever.
To add another layer of quality, the most impressive new engine releases are pitted against a range of winners from the previous year. And for a dose of reality, entries are required to fall under a base vehicle cap of $US60,000.
Four carry-over winners were included this year: The 6.2-litre OHV 'LT1' Chevrolet V8 seen in the Corvette Stingray, the economical 1.0-litre turbo-triple from the Fiesta, an impressive 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 from the Dodge Ram truck range and the 1.8-litre turbocharged four-pot EA888 variant that appears in several Volkswagen group products.
The newcomers were whittled down from a shortlist of 37 entries, and the pure-EV BMW i3 leads the list. Another alternatively-fuelled vehicle, the Hyundai Tucson/ix35 FCV that is powered by a 100kW fuel cell, also made the grade.
Traditionalists can still rejoice with the mighty 527kW supercharged OHV V8 of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat included. The remaining winners were all of the small-capacity, DOHC, turbo-petrol variety: Mini's 1.5-litre triple, found in the Cooper, the 2.0-litre flat-four in the latest Subaru WRX, and the 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit in the Volvo S60.
"It's not just a list for enthusiasts or for environmentalists," WardsAuto World editor-in-chief Drew Winter said of the list. "There's something for every vehicle shopper and every budget. All the powertrains on this list deliver a first-rate driving experience."
The awards will be presented at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 14.
