Plug-in Jeep Wrangler 4xe teased

Plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe shown silently off-roading; will launch later this year but not certain for Australia

Jeep has once again tried to shift the limelight from the Ford Bronco back to its Wrangler 4x4 by releasing a new tease for the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid.

The last short 15-second vid posted on YouTube comes less than a day after it pulled the drapes off the V8-powered Wrangler 392.

Entitled 'Do Not Disturb', the new clip posted to social media shows the future production Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid silently off-roading through dramatic landscape.

Already previewed as a concept back in January at Las Vegas' Consumer Electronics Show, some reports suggest the first-ever plug-in Wrangler will come with the existing 3.6-litre V6.

There talk the electric motor and battery pack will be packaged in a protected area above the rear axle.

It's thought the '4xe' name is a reference to the fact there's will be no physical connection between front and rear axle, with the electric motor driving the rear wheels on pure-electric power for up to 50km.

Set to be introduced before the end of 2020 in the USA, Jeep Australia has yet to confirm even if it is considering the plug-in hybrid Down Under.

That said, it could be offered locally following comments from Jeep’s global boss, Christian Meunier, who hinted it could come to Australia "eventually" in the future.

There's no word yet if the Gladiator pick-up is also destined for the plug-in hybrid powertrain too.
