Sleek, bold and sexy, the Genesis X Speedium Coupe Concept could have been the flagship EV to headline the growing Korean luxury brand’s expanding model line-up.
But the two-door X Speedium Coupe – which has spent several weeks on display at the brand’s Pitt Street Studio in Sydney in the form of a meticulously-designed, sumptuous-looking, resin-covered clay model – might never enter production.
Or so Genesis says.
But car-makers don’t make concept cars for no reason and although Hyundai’s premium brand admits the X Speedium Coupe was never designed to be more than “an internal design exercise”, it hasn’t been shy in showing off the Inje Green concept.
The sleek coupe first appeared at the New York motor show in April, then again at California’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August, when its luxury interior was outed for the first time.
And while the clay model is about to be shipped back to Korea, we’re told its stint at Genesis’ Sydney showroom has also generated loads of public interest.
Genesis Australia spokesperson Guido Schenken admits the swanky X Speedium Coupe would make a great addition to the line-up, but says the four-seater coupe remains a mere fantasy – at least in the short-term – with no prospects of production in the pipeline.
“A striking EV sports coupe would make a great flagship model for the Genesis brand, but unfortunately there are no plans to put the X Speedium Coupe into production,” he said.
“The X Speedium Coupe was originally conceived as an internal design exercise built on our Athletic Elegance design identity, however, it was later decided to be revealed publicly – so no plans for production.”
That’s not to say the show car won’t spawn another – perhaps watered-down (in terms of design) – performance-focused coupe concept in the future, previewing a production-ready, real-world performance coupe.
Indeed, a flagship sports car is conspicuously absent from the showrooms of an ambitious prestige brand that has promised to sell only zero-emissions electric vehicles from 2030.
So far, the only EVs sold in Australia by Genesis are the Electrified G80 large sedan, which will soon to be joined by the Electrified GV70 mid-size SUV, and the smaller GV60 – the only bespoke Genesis EV and the first Genesis to be underpinned by the Hyundai group’s dedicated EV platform, dubbed E-GMP.
That leaves three gaps to fill before 2030, when Genesis has promised to offer six zero-emissions (EV or FCEV) models in Australia.
