1. Volkswagen Touareg
Grabbing a Highly Commended spot at the 2019 carsales Car of The Year, the Volkswagen Touareg has spanned three-generations since its arrival in 2002. Today, it shares its underpinnings with the Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus, and is offered in two trim grades and turbo-diesel power only. Although it's a large SUV, the Volkswagen Touareg is sold with a five-seat option only. A more powerful plug-in hybrid Touareg R is sold overseas, however VW Australia has no plans to introduce it Down Under.

The Volvo XC40 is the Swedish car maker's small-SUV offering. Winner of the 2018 carsales Car Of The Year, the XC40 was introduced in the same year, ready to rival similar-sized premium SUVs like the Jaguar E-PACE and Lexus UX. Today, the Volvo XC40 is sold in three trim levels - Momentum, Inscription and range-topping R-Design - with the only choice of engine a turbocharged four-cylinder and either front- or all-wheel drive layouts. In 2019, the manufacturer revealed a pure-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge, with twin-motors and all-wheel drive, which the company wants to have on sale by 2021.

Taking its cues from the S-Class luxury limo, the very large GL SUV became the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class in 2016. The name change was accompanied by a minor upgrade for the American-built SUV. In Australia the importer offers the GLS in two variants, one petrol, the other diesel. The lower priced petrol model is the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, with a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder, and the diesel is the Mercedes-Benz GLS 400 d - also powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine. Both variants are four-wheel drives and the range will expand with the launch of the V8-engined Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 late in 2020.
