Fuel Efficient Luxury Cars

Fuel-efficient luxury cars are often hybrid sedans, wagons or SUVs, or smaller-displacement models with a turbocharger to offset the torque deficit of a naturally-aspirated engine of the same capacity. Car companies target buyers concerned for the environment or unwilling to pay added luxury car tax, the tax being subject to a green-car dispensation for vehicles consuming fuel at the rate of just 7.0L/100km or less. These cars frequently wear European prestige badges, but also hail from mainstream Asian companies.

1. Alfa Romeo Stelvio

While a latecomer to jump on the SUV bandwagon, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been well-received and is now the brand's top-selling vehicle. Named after the infamous Stelvio pass in Italy - one of the wildest roads in Europe - the curvy-looking medium-sized luxury SUV launched in 2016, powered by a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio received a mid-life update in 2020 with a subtle new look and improvements to the previously criticised interior. Pricing for the Italian competitor to the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC starts at around $66,000 and rises to $150,000 for the rip-snorting 375kW Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio model.

2. Audi Q2

The Audi Q2 is the entry point in the premium car-maker's SUV range with a price range of around $42,000 to $50,000. The compact SUV has been a strong seller for the brand, an urban runabout with decent luxury, technology and convenience features backed up with a snazzy design. Launched in 2016 the Audi Q2 can be customised with dozens of lurid colours and options inside and out, much like its direct rival, the MINI Countryman. Small petrol and diesel engines are available, as are all the latest autonomous driving aids, infotainment and connectivity systems.

3. Audi Q3

Offering reasonable levels of interior space, luxury, power and technology, the Audi Q3 is a small SUV that hits a sweet spot in the prestige SUV market. Launched back in 2011, it's small enough to be a good urban commuter but big enough for weekends away and interstate drives, thanks to a range of engine types - including the ballistic five-cylinder turbo engine in the RS Q3. Often the top-selling Audi vehicle in Australia, the five-door Audi Q3 is in the same weight division as compact SUVs like the Mercedes GLA, BMW X1 and Lexus UX models. There's also a sleek new body style, the Audi Q3 Sportback, adding a little more visual sizzle. Pricing for the Audi Q3 spans $46,000 to $93,000.
