Performance Luxury Cars
Performance luxury cars sit at the summit of a model range, offering buyers driving enjoyment to match the comfort, safety and refinement expected in a luxury car. They are often uprated sedans or two-door models, but can also be passenger-carrying wagons and high-grade SUVs. In the past, the engine of choice would be a naturally-aspirate V8, but turbocharged V6 and V8 powerplants are more common now, and these vehicles are frequently all-wheel drives to harness the added power.

1. Alfa Romeo Stelvio
While a latecomer to jump on the SUV bandwagon, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been well-received and is now the brand's top-selling vehicle. Named after the infamous Stelvio pass in Italy - one of the wildest roads in Europe - the curvy-looking medium-sized luxury SUV launched in 2016, powered by a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio received a mid-life update in 2020 with a subtle new look and improvements to the previously criticised interior. Pricing for the Italian competitor to the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC starts at around $66,000 and rises to $150,000 for the rip-snorting 375kW Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio model.

First rolled out in 2014, the Audi RS Q3 matched the turbocharged five-cylinder quattro powertrain from the TT RS with the small SUV packaging of the Q3 for a hot-hatch-on-stilts from the house of Ingolstadt. The Audi RS Q3 has been a popular model in the local Audi product range, with the manufacturer unveiling a new model early in 2020. Complementing the conventional RS Q3 was a stylish, low-roofed version, the Audi RS Q3 Sportback. Both vehicles are headed for Australia in 2020, priced from just below $90,000.

The Audi SQ5 is a go-fast version of the Audi Q5 medium-sized SUV and was a big success for the brand when the first-generation model launched in Australia in 2013. Fitted with sporty body work, a gutsy V6 diesel engine (230kW/650Nm) and upgraded suspension and brakes, it delivered excellent driving dynamics. The second-generation Audi SQ5 hit the scene in 2017, replacing the turbo-diesel engine with a turbo-petrol unit (260kW/470Nm) but is yet to achieve the popularity of its predecessor. Pricing for the Audi SQ5 starts at just under $100,000.
