7-seater Off Road Cars

Seven-seat off-road vehicles are large or extra-large SUVs with seating arrangement for two in the front, two in the rear and three in the middle. Powered by large-displacement engines mounted longitudinally – usually diesels – these part-time four-wheel drives are fitted with a dual-range transfer system, a reduction gear with multi-plate clutch and at least one differential lock. Constant four-wheel drive models also feature dual-range transfer, but drive through a centre differential. More expensive versions feature height-adjustable air suspension.

1. Nissan Patrol

Nissan's Patrol has been a favourite of Outback adventurers for decades, after a G60 Nissan Patrol was the first vehicle to cross the Simpson Desert in 1960. Various short and long-wheelbase, turbo-diesel and petrol variants of the rugged 4WD passenger vehicle have been sold since 1951 before an all-new upmarket V8-petrol only Nissan Patrol arrived here in 2012 as a replacement for the ageing Y61 diesel Patrol. It's the most luxurious and expensive Nissan Patrol to date, proving attractive to caravanners and boaties with its 3500kg towing capacity.

The LDV D90 was part of the brand's Australian launch in November 2017, bringing two diesel drivetrains and three equipment grades in a stylish five-door wagon body style offering up to seven seats, all priced from under $37,000. 3. Ford Everest

The Ford Everest has graced Australian showrooms from 2015, though its Down Under connection began long before that. Based on the Ranger ute's T6 ladder-frame platform, the Everest was engineered locally by Ford Australia. A 3.2-litre turbo-diesel was the initial engine of choice, offering 143kW and 470Nm. It was later joined by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder with 157kW and 500Nm - mated solely to the flagship Titanium grade. The Ford Everest is available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive forms, with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. It is available as a five-seater or seven-seater.
