Commercial Off Road Cars
Commercial utes are 4x2 or 4x4 models that are hard-working, durable machines that are affordable and they literally deliver the goods. These spartan vehicles often come with rubber flooring and vinyl upholstery. Built down to a price for fleet buyers, commercial utes rarely feature high-grade stereo of multi-zone climate control, but the demands of OH&S for the safety of employees ensures these vehicles are safer than ever in a crash.

1. Ford Ranger
The Ranger is Ford Australia's showroom darling, having commanded the lion's share of blue oval sales since the closure of Ford's local manufacturing operations in 2015. The dominance of the Ford Ranger should be of little surprise, since it was designed and engineered at Ford's Victorian global engineering outpost. The current model has been on sale since 2011 and last underwent a facelift in 2015. There are three body styles - Single cab, Super Cab and Double Cab - and as ever the Ranger is sold with a choice of 3.2-litre turbo-diesel five-cylinder and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrains, the latter installed in the flagship Ranger Raptor. A new Ford Ranger is due out in 2022.

In the US the generic name for a heavy-duty four-wheel drive is 'Jeep', but in Australia it's 'LandCruiser'. The Toyota LandCruiser arrived in Australia in 1957 and the model line quickly overtook the Land Rover in the hearts and minds of Australians, winning them over with its combination of robustness and off-road capability. In rural and regional areas the Toyota LandCruiser has been the off-road wagon of choice for government utilities and the mining industry. The Toyota LandCruiser has been a massive sales success in Australia over a number of years, outselling its one close competitor, the Nissan Patrol, in a ratio as high as five to one.
