Midsize Off Road Cars

Mid-size off-road vehicles can be SUVs or one-tonne 4x4 pick-ups. The vast majority of these vehicles are part-time four-wheel drives with dual-range transfer. Better examples come with at least one differential lock. Almost all feature a longitudinal powertrain, with the engine, transmission and transfer case arranged in a line from the front wheels towards the rear, and drive is typically taken from a reduction gear with multi-plate clutch to the front wheels.

1. Haval H8

An attractively styled rival to larger SUVs such as the Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Kluger, the Haval H8 launched in Australia with the promise of a long standard equipment list across the range. Two trim levels were offered, along with the choice of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive traction. Power was supplied by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder, driving through a six-speed automatic. Sales weren't what the distributor expected however, and the Haval H8 was discontinued in 2018, just three years after going on sale in Australia.

2. Ford Everest

The Ford Everest has graced Australian showrooms from 2015, though its Down Under connection began long before that. Based on the Ranger ute's T6 ladder-frame platform, the Everest was engineered locally by Ford Australia. A 3.2-litre turbo-diesel was the initial engine of choice, offering 143kW and 470Nm. It was later joined by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder with 157kW and 500Nm - mated solely to the flagship Titanium grade. The Ford Everest is available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive forms, with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. It is available as a five-seater or seven-seater.

3. Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee badge dates back to the 1970s, when it debuted on a rugged two-door version of the US-built Wagoneer large wagon. In current fifth-generation guise the five-door Jeep Cherokee competes in the medium SUV category, and is available locally in front-drive and all-wheel drive, with a choice of petrol engines paired to an automatic transmission. The range-topping Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk boasts serious off-road credentials along with the more powerful V6 engine and, in keeping with Jeep's off-road heritage, is the only vehicle in its class with low-range four-wheel drive.
