Large Sedans

Large sedans have fallen out of favour since the end of manufacturing in Australia, but prestige models are still sold here. Other than some extra hip and shoulder room, large cars – up to around five metres in length – rarely offer more cabin space than medium cars. They’re often purchased for their rear-wheel drive dynamics and towing ability.

1. Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Second only to the S-Class in the Mercedes-Benz pantheon, the E-Class is the brand's large passenger car (but still smaller than the limo-like S-Class). The Mercedes-Benz E-Class officially adopted that model line naming convention in 1996, with the release of the W211 series. Currently the E-Class is offered in coupe, convertible, sedan and high-riding wagon formats. The engines range from a 1.9-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder all the way up to the powerhouse 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 of the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S, costing north of a quarter of a million dollars.

2. Audi A6

With a pedigree for top-level luxury, the Audi A6 large sedan and wagon have been making Aussie drivers feel special since 1997. Launched in Europe in 1994, the car has evolved through five generations to perfect the art of blending luxury, technology and style. Priced between around $85,000 and $116,000, the Audi A6 is offered with a range of engine types, petrol, diesel, hybrid and even a crazy 400kW-plus RS 6 wagon. Rivals for the Audi A6 include long-standing luxury flagbearers, the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
