Small Sedans

Small sedans are longer than their hatchback counterparts, with the rear overhang of the boot taking the overall length up to around 4.8 metres. Buyers may prefer the small sedan over a small hatch because they need the extra luggage space for prams and pushers, or they feel safer with the extra crumple zone provided by the boot.

1. Kia Cerato

Not to be treated lightly in Australia's small-car segment, the Kia Cerato has been a part of the scene since the mid-noughties, when the 2004 four-door sedan preceded the arrival of a five-door hatch a year later. A cousin of Hyundai's omnipresent i30 hatch, today's third-generation Kia Cerato is a regular podium finisher in the segment, for good reason: It's very well priced, offers the same functionality as its competitors and, with a broad mix of family-friendly and sports-oriented offerings, satisfies a broad range of customers.

2. Toyota Corolla

Tracing its history back to 1967, the Toyota Corolla is one of the veteran nameplates in Toyota's Australian range of cars. Entering local production just a year later, the Toyota Corolla continued to be built in Australia over a three-decade run. Near the end of its production life, the Corolla was rebadged and sold through Holden dealerships as the Holden Nova. Corolla production in Australia ended in 1999, making way for the Avalon large car to be built in Toyota's Altona plant. The Toyota Corolla has since carried on as a fully-imported model, now offering buyers a choice of a conventional powertrain or a petrol/electric hybrid alternative, and two body styles, sedan and hatch.

3. Mazda 3

The original BK-series Mazda3 replaced the popular Mazda 323 in 2003, before being replaced by the second-generation BL in 2008, the third-generation BM in 2013 - which went on to become Australia's top-selling new vehicle bar none - and the fourth-generation BP-series in 2019. Based on a new SKYACTIV platform and debuting Mazda's revolutionary SKYACTIV-X compression-ignition petrol engines in the second half of 2020, the latest Mazda3 continues the Mazda small-car tradition of four-cylinder petrol engines driving the front wheels. Where it differs, however, is in its near-premium pricing as part of an upmarket push by the Japanese brand.
