4x2 Adventure Cars
A 4x2 adventure vehicle, can tow caravans and other unpowered vehicles (horse floats, boat trailers, etc) on well serviced roads. With a dual-cab body they can also transport the entire family to holiday destinations and stow all the sporting and recreational equipment in the rear tub or tray for activities at the end of the journey. Single-cab versions for grey nomads could carry a slide-on camper also. A diesel engine will reduce running costs and extend the driving range.

1. Ford Ranger
The Ranger is Ford Australia's showroom darling, having commanded the lion's share of blue oval sales since the closure of Ford's local manufacturing operations in 2015. The dominance of the Ford Ranger should be of little surprise, since it was designed and engineered at Ford's Victorian global engineering outpost. The current model has been on sale since 2011 and last underwent a facelift in 2015. There are three body styles - Single cab, Super Cab and Double Cab - and as ever the Ranger is sold with a choice of 3.2-litre turbo-diesel five-cylinder and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrains, the latter installed in the flagship Ranger Raptor. A new Ford Ranger is due out in 2022.

Holden's Colorado workhorse is a staple in the brand's model lineup that competes with stellar contenders such as Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. It also forms the basis for the HSV SportsCat ute, the tricked-up all-rounder that was conceived in the same vein as the Ford Raptor and HiLux Rugged X. Powered by a solid 147kW/500Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine and featuring a dual-range off-road transmission in manual or auto form, there's little that will stop a determined Holden Colorado off-road yet it's frugal in terms of fuel economy, with a claimed 8.6L/100km. And it comes in five-seat cab-chassis form, with two or four-door cabin access, or with the choice of 4x4 or rear-drive as well.

Australia's best-selling car is a ute, in fact, the Toyota HiLux first reaching the number-one spot in 2016. That feat was a long time coming for Toyota's redoubtable light commercial vehicle, which can trace its heritage in Australia back to 1968. Offered in a wide range of variants, the Toyota HiLux is available in differing levels of trim, in 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrain configurations, plus single-cab, extra-cab and double-cab styles. Engines comprise two turbo-diesels and one petrol unit. All are four-cylinder powerplants.
