Light commercial Adventure Cars

A light-commercial 'adventure' vehicle is any vehicle designed primarily for commercial fleets, but can be pressed into service for recreational activities. The so-called 'sin bins' of the 1970s and early 1980s would be one example. They can tow campers and caravans, or ski boats, horse floats and car trailers. Typically they're utes and vans up to a payload of one tonne, and some buyers prefer 4x4 off-roaders to reach that secluded diving spot or hiking trail.

1. Ford Transit

The Ford Transit has been a household name in commercial circles for decades. Ford's van first appeared in the 1970s, with a modest 1.7-litre four-cylinder petrol mated to a three-speed automatic. The full-size, modern day version is night and day compared to earlier generations, with car-like safety, excellent equipment levels, proven dynamics and credentials that make it suitable for nearly any task. Built in Turkey, the current Ford Transit can be had in long-wheelbase van, single cab or double cab chassis guises, each tied to a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder. Towing capacity is rated at 3.5 tonnes.

2. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Back in 1998 Mercedes-Benz blurred the line between its trucks range and its passenger-car range when it introduced the Vito and Sprinter commercial vehicles. While the Vito was the lighter of the two, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was an important component of the importer's strategy - a strategy that later paid off with volume sales to fleets like Australia Post and various ambulance services around the country. In the years since its introduction, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has become the benchmark in the medium commercial vehicle sector of the market, now offering buyers up to 1700 possible variants.
