Midsize Convertibles

Mid-size convertibles around 4.5 to 4.8 metres in length are usually based on coupes, also sharing platforms with sedans or hatchbacks. Commonly rear-wheel drives from prestige marques, these mid-size convertibles provide some driving enjoyment, but usually target buyers wanting comfort, looks and brand cachet. Prices start from just below the luxury car tax threshold but rapidly escalate from there.

1. Porsche 911

It's hard to imagine a car that has made such an impact on the global sports coupe market as the Porsche 911. The first version appeared in 1964 and continued in the same basic form to 1999 when it was replaced by the virtually all-new 996 model - switching from air to water cooling for the boxer six-cylinder engine. Over the long history of the 911 there has been a multitude of Porsche 911 variants, including Turbo and AWD versions, plus body styles including convertibles and Targa-top coupes. Between 1965 and 1969, there was also a 1.6-litre four-cylinder 912 model using the engine from the previous 356 series. For the moment at least, however, the Porsche 911 retains its flat-six engine.

2. Audi S5

Late in 2007, the V8-engined Audi S5 launched in Australia as a two-door coupe. Convertible and five-door 'Sportback' variants followed with the release of a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 range in 2010, which was in turn replaced by a turbocharged V6 for the lighter, more powerful new-generation model in 2016. The current model is lined up for a mild facelift and an upgrade in 2020 and will, like all the Audi S5 models before it, drive through a 'quattro' all-wheel drive system for optimal traction.

3. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

For a long time the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been the sales champion of the range in Australia, but has recently lost ground to its stablemates the GLC SUV and the smaller A-Class hatch and sedan. The C-Class is still the benchmark vehicle in the medium passenger-car segment above $60,000 however. Tracing its roots back to the W201 series of 190E from the mid 1980s, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has evolved over the years and in 2020 is past its prime in the 205 series model cycle. The range comprises sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible - all the way up to the powderkeg character of the V8-engined Mercedes-AMG C 63.
