Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV previewed

Flagship battery-powered SUV will be followed by rugged zero-emissions G-Wagen

Mercedes-Maybach has confirmed it is readying an ultra-luxurious version of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV that's set to join its pure-electric line-up in 2022.

Posting the first image of the high-riding EQS during a livestream last week, Benz's marketing boss Britta Seeger confirmed both Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-Maybach SUV versions of the new EQS limo would be launched next year.

And she also confirmed that the rumoured full-electric G-Class 4x4 off-roader was in the works and due to debut in 2024.

It's been reported that Mercedes-Benz will pull the drapes off the zero-emissions G-Wagen as soon as early this September at the Munich motor show.

There's no news whether the current G-Class' ladder-frame chassis will be re-engineered for a pure-electric powertrain or if it will use the dedicated EVA architecture underpinning both the EQS limo and EQS SUV.

Whatever the case, it's a safe bet both SUVs will feature a development of the range-topping EQS 580 4MATIC powertrain. That means you should expect a large 107.8kWh lithium-ion battery and dual electric motors providing all-wheel drive and producing 385kW/855Nm.

The EQS is expected to come with a range of around 600km.

An even more powerful dual-motor set-up borrowed from upcoming Mercedes-AMG version of the EQS, potentially badged EQS 730, is also anticipated and could push output to as high as 530kW/1150Nm.

Speaking of the German car-maker's upcoming pure-electric AMGs, Seeger said the high-performance models would feature pioneering tech.

"These upcoming AMGs will also move boundaries in terms of efficiency and aerodynamics. And there will be so much more to come to make these cars real AMGs in an electric world," she said.
