2023 Volkswagen Amarok online configurator goes live

Aussies can now ‘build’ and lodge pre-orders for new VW Amarok as first utes arrive and economy confirmed

VW Australia’s online configurator for the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok has gone live in conjunction with the opening of pre-orders for the new-generation dual-cab ute.

The first examples of the new Volkswagen Amarok, which is based on the hugely popular new Ford Ranger, have also arrived Down Under, with deliveries now expected to commence in the first week of May.

More than 12,000 expressions of interest in the German brand’s new ute have been made by prospective buyers over the past few months.

As previously reported, the new Amarok range will start from $50,990 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Core TDI405 manual and top out at $79,990 plus ORCs for the top-spec Aventura in either TDI600 diesel or TSI452 petrol guise.

The first utes to land in Australia are being used for technical training ahead of the Amarok’s national launch next month.

They include an Amarok Aventura TSI452, which features a 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that’s found in the Ford Mustang but not the Australian-spec Ford Ranger, and an Amarok Style V6, which is expected to be the volume-seller of the range with its high spec and 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles director Ryan Davies said the initial response to the new model has exceeded the company’s expectations, despite Australia already being the leading Amarok market worldwide.

“Amarok owners are among the most passionate of any vehicle nameplate in Australia and with good reason,” he said.

“Our Australian-based designers have heard the feedback from our market’s cohort of owners and created a tougher, more dynamic and more advanced Amarok.

“To have some 12,000 expressions of interest has blown us away.”

Volkswagen had originally planned to stagger the introduction of the new Amarok with the higher-grade Style V6, PanAmericana and Aventura variants set to lead the charge roughly a month ahead of the cheaper Life and base Core.

Now, however, VW Australia has confirmed the full line-up is arriving together, even though the manual Core is temporarily missing from the configurator.

The Amarok’s impending release has also brought forward official fuel consumption figures for its Ford-derived powertrains.

The entry-level 125kW/405Nm 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel engine will sip 7.1L/100km on the combined cycle when paired with the standard six-speed manual transmission, or 8.0L/100km in automatic guise.

The higher-output (154kW/500Nm) 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel, which combines with a 10-speed automatic, returns 7.2L/100km.

By comparison, the gustier 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel (184kW/600Nm) consumes 8.4L/100km, while the 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol (222kW/452Nm) is the thirstiest of the lot at 9.9L/100km.
