The 2024 MINI Cooper 5 Door has made its global debut and the bigger and more practical alternative to the new MINI Cooper 3 Door will arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of this year for those not wanting to step up to the Countryman SUV or the Clubman-replacing Aceman electric SUV, which are also due here this year.
Pricing and specification details for the petrol-powered premium hatch will be release closer to its local release, but MINI Australia has today confirmed four trim levels – Essential, Classic, Favoured and JCW – and the same two turbo-petrol powertrains as the Cooper 3 Door.
Said powerplants are a 115kW/230Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder for ‘Cooper C’ variants, and a bigger and more powerful 150kW/300Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder for ‘Cooper S’ grades, both driving the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The two extra doors have added 172mm to the Cooper hatchback’s overall length (now 4036mm), 72mm of which can be found in the wheelbase – the rest residing behind the rear axle.
MINI says this gives the new 5 Door a very similar stature to its predecessor while providing more room inside the cabin for occupants and a bigger boot, which now offers 275 litres of volume.
Total cargo volume is rated at 925L with the 60:40-split second row of seats folded.
Beyond its extra length, the rest of the 5 Door’s design is almost identical to the 3 Door’s both inside and out, with highlights including the circular LED headlights, framed grille, Union Jack tail-lights, the availability of 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels, and a 9.4-inch circular infotainment interface.
That signature infotainment system is run by the latest-generation MINI Operating System 9 and supported by a head-up display on all grades, since the circular interface also acts as the instrument cluster.
“The larger body version of the purist MINI Cooper also delivers the brand’s hallmark driving fun and agile handling,” said MINI Australia.
“There is a choice of two efficient petrol engines which, combined with the modern chassis and precise steering, deliver the hallmark MINI go-kart feeling.”
Odds are that MINI Cooper 5 Door pricing will start a few thousand dollars upstream of the equivalent 3 Door (from $41,990 plus on-road costs), but there’s been no indication of a battery-electric version as yet, suggesting the local five-door line-up will be smaller than the three-door range.
