Luxury car brand Genesis is set to generate more attention – and adrenaline – with a new range of tyre-shredding, track-ready automobiles, starting with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N-derived Genesis GV60 Magma.
The high-performance crossover will lap Mount Panorama alongside an insane 1148kW hypercar concept in the hands of 1977 Bathurst 1000 winner Jacky Ickx at the 2025 Bathurst 12 Hour later this month, the opening move of Genesis’ quest to convince Aussie buyers to switch from German high-performance sub-brands like BMW M, Mercedes-AMG and Audi Sport.
Although full technical details have yet to be revealed around the GV60 Magma, we know it is closely-related to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, which means it will likely share its 84kWh battery pack and come with a dual-motor drivetrain worth 478kW/770Nm, if not more.
The dynamic debut will also be the first time anywhere in the world spectators will get the chance to witness the Genesis X Gran Berlinetta being driven in anger.
Genesis expects the hybrid hypercar concept will attract a completely new audience to the brand, which has so far delivered a fairly conservative product portfolio, and make for quite the spectacle at Bathurst, especially in the hands of brand ambassador and former Bathurst 1000 winner Ickx.
Featuring a Le Mans-style aero package, which comprises an extended carbon-fibre splitter, canards, enlarged rocker panel, full-carbon rear wing, roof turret and huge rear diffuser, the 80-year-old Belgian icon will have his work cut out grappling with the huge downforce and epic power on tap.
The X Gran Berlinetta debuted with a monstrous 1148kW/1425Nm V6 petrol-electric hybrid system, the internal-combustion element of which is said to rev to 10,000rpm.
It’s not known if the Bathurst-bound concept keeps the show car’s powertrain, but if it does, it could set the fastest lap of the weekend.
The X Gran Berlinetta was originally created for the Gran Turismo racing game (Sony Playstation), but has subsequently been used as a rolling statement of intent to spearhead Magma’s global launch.
The first Magma product to land Down Under will be the GV60 that will enter production later this year and arrive in local showrooms by early 2026.
Maximising its performance at Bathurst will be its variable torque splitting tech and virtual gearshift functions that will add plenty of driver engagement during the hot laps.
Featuring a wider, lower stance than the standard GV60, the new Magma bags a bespoke chassis tune and larger uprated brakes, plus a comprehensively reworked package of aerodynamics.
Pricing is tipped to start north of $130,000, given the Performance AWD flagship of the existing two-variant GV60 range costs $110,384 plus ORCs,?although that figure will likely increase with the release of the facelifted GV60.
Commenting on his upcoming X Gran Berlinetta drive at Bathurst Ickx said: “I have also long admired Mount Panorama at Bathurst as one of the world’s great motor racing venues, and I can’t wait to put the incredible Genesis X Gran Berlinetta through its paces, for all the world to see.”
Late last year Genesis pulled the drapes off the GMR-001 Hypercar that will compete in the World Endurance Championship as of 2026 and the IMSA GTP program in 2027, with the ultimate goal of?winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright.
Developed to compete in the FIA LMDh category, the GMR-001 will fight for victory under the new Genesis Magma Racing name with a chassis supplied by Oreca and a hybrid system made by Bosch, WAE and Xtrac – all standard components used to keep costs fixed and racing close.
It’s hotly tipped that the Le Mans racer will use an upgraded powertrain based on the X Gran Berlinetta’s electrified V6.
