The next-generation 2025 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport probably won’t arrive at least the second half of next year given the current model has just been facelifted again, but that hasn’t stopped digital artist Theottle from rendering the all-new Ford Everest rival – and the results are extremely promising.
The Mitsubishi Triton-based wagon has long been a popular player in the large off-road SUV market, even if it’s now falling behind the times in terms of outputs, technology and towing capacity.
But the next-generation Pajero Sport could well be one of the biggest 4x4 releases of next year, given it’s set to improve in every metric with an overhauled ladder-frame platform, more powerful turbo-diesel and more advanced tech from the new Mitsubishi Triton ute.
Perhaps most crucially, it could also inherit the Triton’s 3500kg braked towing capacity, while a plug-in hybrid powertrain is also very much on the cards.
Using the new Mitsubishi Triton GSR flagship as a starting point, Theottle has altered the front-end with design cues from the Outlander SUV and then applied the profile of the latest Toyota 4Runner to evolve the pick-up body into a striking wagon.
The effective wheelbase has been mildly shortened, the rear doors lengthened and the rear overhang reduced, while a fair bit of artistic license was employed for the Everest-inspired tailgate.
Based on what we’ve seen from the latest Triton, the 2025 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will be considerably bigger than the current model and powered by a twin-turbo 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine good for 150kW/480Nm.
A 3500kg maximum braked towing capacity is par for the course, as is the retention of Mitsubishi’s lauded SuperSelect II 4x4 system, which allows drivers to operate the vehicle both in 2H and 4H on sealed surfaces.
A PHEV version of the new Pajero Sport was vaguely teased by Mitsubishi Australia earlier this week as part of a preview of the Japanese brand’s upcoming electrified model range, which also featured the plug-in hybrid Triton, production-spec Mitsubishi D:X (Delica) and Mitsubishi Xforce small SUV (ASX replacement).
