Subaru's next generation Impreza has gone on show at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne today. Impreza boasts a stylish new look, complete with the company's new hexagonal corporate grille and hawk-eye headlamps.
Under the bonnet, Subaru's all-new (110kW/196Nm) 2.0-litre horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine improves fuel efficiency, and, for the first time, is available with the brand's Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). A six-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard. All models also adopt electrically assisted power steering.
A longer wheelbase (now 2644mm) and shorter overhangs give the new Impreza more interior space, despite the exterior dimensions being the same as those found on the previous model.
Among the interior changes, the repositioning of the windscsreen's A-pillar allows an additional 200mm of space, while at the same time improving driver visibility and front seat entry/exit. The instrument panel has also been repositioned and is flatter than before, contributing to an increased field of vision. A tilt/reach steering column is also offered across the range.
Cabin decor is freshened by redesigned door and roof trims, and slimmer front seats, allowing rear seat passengers 50.8mm more legroom. New door designs also mean more hip and shoulder room.
Cargo space is also increased, while hatch models gain a fold flat floor thanks to revised 60:40 split-fold rear seats. Additional storage pockets further increase Impreza's storage versatility.
While Australian specifications have yet to be confirmed, US-spec models feature such inclusions as a multi-function display, power windows, mirrors and door locks, trip computer, keyless entry and a security system with engine immobiliser.
Up-spec models add alloy wheels, Bluetooth telephony and audio streaming, steering wheel-mounted remote controls, sunroof, leather trim and climate control air conditioning.
To improve ride and handling, the new Impreza receives strengthened front and rear suspension components.
As well as Subaru's acclaimed symmetrical all-wheel drive system the new Impreza includes such safety features as stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution and seven airbags (front, side, curtain and driver's knee).
"Our fourth generation Impreza has been warmly received overseas… and is already drawing significant customer enquiry and is likely to generate even more interest in Australia thanks to its headlining status at the show," said Subaru Australia's managing director, Nick Senior.
