Self-driving cars won’t spell the end of high-performance brands, Mercedes-AMG’s boss insisted yesterday. In fact, he said the German hot-shop will embrace driverless technology.
In spite of parent company Mercedes-Benz pointing the way to its autonomous future with the F015 Luxury In Motion concept car, Mercedes-AMG President Tobias Moers says he strongly doubts driverless technology will push brands like his to the margins.
“If there is still a button to turn it off, that’s the better way for us at AMG,” Moers said at the New York motor show.
“If it’s up to me where I drive and when I don’t drive, then that makes me happy still.”
But Moers said autonomous vehicle technology will eventually be introduced by Mercedes-AMG.
“If I drive to the office in Stuttgart from Affalterbach and I can make my calls and look at my computer, that’s not a problem, even if I’m in an AMG. A lot of the time, driving is not so enjoyable or you have other priorities.
“But if I drive home from the office at 10:00pm and the roads are clear, then I like to drive my AMG.”
