Audi service book thefts a puzzle
Thieves are targeting Audis in the City of Boroondara – and they appear to be mainly interested in the service logbookPolice are puzzled by a string of logbook thefts from Audis in the Boroondara municipality (Melbourne's east) over the last two months.
The thieves target Audis specifically, generally ignoring other items that may be left in the vehicle. Entry to the car is usually made by breaking the passenger's side window and it seems just about any Audi is prey.
One owner, who had his 2010 A5 broken into recently, told motoring.com.au that "an A4 parked a few spots away was broken into as well."
The thieves stole only the owner's handbook, and fortunately he had previously removed the spare key.
Speculation concerning the reason behind the thefts centres on the fact that the thieves seem not to be so much targeting the log books, but the spare keys that in some cases are attached. This gives rise to the theory that the thieves plan to steal the car for breaking down into spare parts or, maybe, re-birthing it as a second-hand car with a new identity.
Another theory is that the logbooks are being used to resell older Audis with lower kilometres and better service records than they actually possess. The police are aware of the problem and are patrolling the area.
It is suggested Audi owners deter the thieves by parking their vehicles off the street or in a garage.
