Sources insist Audi has spotted a gap in the market for a BMW X6-style car to sit between its two smallest SUVs and is already deep into the process of designing it.
The latest in Audi's new model onslaught, the Q4, as it will be called, will look nothing like anything in Audi's current line-up, sources say.
"It would have to be visually and, in its styling, a different concept from the mainstream Q cars," one source admitted.
"Expect it to have a very different body style, more sporting and more aggressive in its look, with performance to match."
Insiders admit Audi has shied away from a full-frontal assault on BMW's X6 partly out of fears of cannibilising its own Q7 and partly because it could end up "owning" the market for years until its rivals catch up.
"Partly, we are looking here because BMW is already there with the X6 and they're not in this market, so we may have it to ourselves for a while.
"Partly, we are looking here because the Q7 is making a lot of money and we wouldn't want to risk it by taking sales away with a Q6."
That doesn't mean Audi is ignoring the Q7 altogether, though, with insiders admitting the next version will be built off a larger version of the current Q5's architecture.
"It will be shorter to address the criticism of its length in markets like Europe, but it will be very, very sophisticated," a source hinted.
