Benz launches G-Wagen LAPV 6.X Concept

Unveiled as a concept vehicle in Paris this week, Mercedes-Benz says its new G-Wagen Light Armoured Patrol Vehicle 6.X brings new levels of agility, protection and payload  -- the "impossible triangle" of elements considered critical to every armoured vehicle.

Building on the strengths of the current LAPV 5.4 (Light Armoured Patrol Vehicle), the revised military spec G-Wagen benefits from increased agility thanks to further weight savings, higher ground clearance (approx 450mm), improved wading depth (now 1000mm), high performance brakes and variable lift front and rear coil-over air shock absorbers that can alter the vehicle's ride height, even when on the move.

Despite its light weight, the 6.X Concept is capable of carrying a payload up to 1300kg, says its maker.

It offers a high level of ballistic protection thanks to a full steel monocoque body clad with a modular armour plate system to "allow quick replacement of damaged plates". And so you can avoid being hit in the first place, a jamming system is fitted to neutralise enemy communication networks and radio-controlled attacks.

Keeping missions on track, the G-banger features a high-torque common-rail turbodiesel BlueTec engine for speeds up to 150km/h. Optionally, the engine bay can be protected by additional ballistic protection panels to make sure the vehicle (and the troops) return home in one piece.

Off-road the G-Wagen is king, its compact 2850mm wheelbase and astonishing approach/departure angles (50/45-degrees) allowing penetration into even the harshest of environments. Individual tyre inflation control can quickly adapt tyre pressures to suit varied terrain, without leaving the safety of the cab. And in case things don’t go according to plan, the 6.X is fitted with a crash-safe data recorder system to register all relevant data, voice and video.
