BMW announces budget 3 Series for Oz

Entry-level 316i model to join the 3 Series range from $50,900 this June

BMW is preparing for the arrival a new budget offering to its 3 Series range. The 316i will join the existing five-model 3 Series line-up from June, and will be priced from a competitive $50,900.

It is the cheapest 3 Series to join the ranks since the 1994 E36-series 318i -- a model offered with a manual transmission and a single airbag for $49,650.

But BMW was quick to say that the new addition will not be a base model special, guaranteeing the 316i will be equipped in an identical format to the current entry-end model, the 318d.

Motivation for the new budget variant comes from a TwinPower Turbo 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol, the same engine currently used in 116i and 118i models. It develops 100kW and 220Nm while consuming just 5.9L/100km on the combined cycle.

As with all models in the current 3 Series range, the 316i will be offered exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. It is also to be offered with BMW’s complete range of ‘Line’ model packages (Modern, Sport and Luxury) and well as the sharper M Sport Package. Package options will attract the same premium as those offered on the 318d sedan.

BMW insists the introduction of a new entry model is not a ‘reactionary’ move, though we can’t help notice just how the positioning of the new 316i will confront its nearest rivals.

As a point of reference, the base model Audi A4 enters from $52,700. It is offered with a more potent (125kW/320Nm) 1.8-litre trubo-petrol engine, but arrives with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The budget Mercedes-Benz C 200 BlueEFFICIENCY starts at $59,900 and is powered by a (135kW/270Nm)1.8-litre turbo-petrol mated to a seven-speed auto.

“The factory has started building a new entry-level model which we will launch in the Australian market from April production,” said BMW Australia’s head of product planning, Toni Andreevski.

“The spec[ification] will be the same as the current 318d sedan and this car will come to market from below $51,000.”
